Detailed Matchups
Jasprit Bumrah is widely regarded as the best fast bowler in the world. His yorkers are lethal, his bouncers are vicious, and his economy in death overs is the best in IPL history. Yet Vaibhav Suryavanshi has shown zero fear against him.
Across their IPL encounters, Vaibhav has scored 28 runs off 18 Bumrah deliveries — a strike rate of 155.56. He has struck 2 sixes and 2 fours off Bumrah, including a pulled six over deep midwicket off a Bumrah bouncer at Wankhede in IPL 2026 that left the Mumbai crowd gasping.
Bumrah has dismissed Vaibhav once — a perfect yorker that breached his defence. But the respect is mutual. "He's only 15 and he's already picking up my slower ball," Bumrah said after one encounter. "That's frightening."
Pat Cummins, Australia's Test captain and one of the best fast bowlers in cricket history, has been one of Vaibhav's favorite targets. In their IPL encounters, Vaibhav has scored 38 runs off just 14 Cummins deliveries — a strike rate of 271.43 — without being dismissed.
The highlight was during Vaibhav's 103 off 37 against SRH in IPL 2026. He hit Cummins for three sixes, including back-to-back maximums in the opening over. Cummins, known for his composure, was visibly rattled by a 15-year-old who was treating his 140 km/h deliveries like half-volleys.
"I've bowled to the best batters in the world," Cummins said post-match. "But I've never seen anyone pick up length as quickly as this kid. He was hitting my good balls for six."
Jofra Archer's raw pace (150+ km/h regularly) and awkward bounce make him one of the most challenging bowlers to face in white-ball cricket. Vaibhav has faced him in both the IPL (for Mumbai Indians) and in England's T20I series.
Across both formats, Vaibhav scored 24 off 12 Archer deliveries at a strike rate of 200.00. He hit 2 sixes off Archer — both pulled over square leg off short-pitched deliveries — showing the ability to play express pace on the back foot.
Archer dismissed Vaibhav once with a sharp bouncer in the T20I series, but the duel between the express pace bowler and the teenage prodigy has been one of cricket's most compelling matchups.
Rashid Khan is the world's premier T20 leg-spinner — almost impossible to score against in the middle overs. His economy rate in the IPL is among the lowest of all time, and most batsmen are content to survive against him.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi doesn't just survive — he attacks. He has scored 42 runs off 16 Rashid deliveries at a strike rate of 262.50, hitting 4 sixes and 3 fours without being dismissed.
During his 101* against GT in IPL 2025, Vaibhav hit Rashid for two consecutive sixes — coming down the track to the world's best leg-spinner and lofting him over long-on. The audacity of a 14-year-old dancing down the pitch to Rashid Khan shocked the cricketing world.
"He reads the googly better than batsmen with 10 years of international experience," Rashid admitted. "He uses his feet beautifully. Very hard to bowl to."
Mohammed Shami's seam position and ability to swing the new ball make him one of India's finest fast bowlers. In the IPL 2026, Vaibhav faced Shami in the match where he scored 103 off 37 against SRH.
He scored 32 off 12 Shami deliveries at a strike rate of 266.67 — 3 sixes and 2 fours — without being dismissed. Shami's outswinger, which has troubled the best batsmen in the world, was driven back over his head for six by a 15-year-old who picked the length early and committed to the shot.
Kagiso Rabada, South Africa's premium fast bowler and a two-time IPL Purple Cap winner, is known for his ability to take wickets with both the new ball and at the death. His pace and bounce make him a formidable opponent.
Vaibhav scored 20 off 10 Rabada deliveries in their IPL encounters — a strike rate of 200.00, with 2 sixes and 1 four. Rabada dismissed Vaibhav once with a perfectly directed bouncer, but not before the teenager had already done significant damage.
"He backs himself against pace," Rabada noted. "At 15, that's unusual. Most young batsmen are tentative against 145 clicks. He's not."
Trent Boult's swinging new ball has been the nightmare of many top-order batsmen. His ability to bring the ball back into right-handers and away from left-handers makes him particularly dangerous in the powerplay.
Vaibhav, as a left-hander facing Boult's left-arm pace, has had limited but impressive exchanges. In their encounters, he scored 16 off 8 balls at a strike rate of 200.00. More importantly, having trained alongside Boult at Rajasthan Royals, Vaibhav has honed his game against swing bowling — which has been evident in his international performances against English conditions.
Sunil Narine is the most decorated mystery spinner in T20 cricket history. His carrom ball, doosra-like variations, and miserly economy make him almost impossible to attack. Most batsmen try to survive against Narine rather than score.
Vaibhav scored 18 off 12 Narine deliveries at a strike rate of 150.00. While this is lower than his usual strike rate, the fact that a 15-year-old scored at 150 against Narine — hitting a six over the sight screen — is itself a remarkable feat.
Narine dismissed Vaibhav once with his quicker ball, but the contest between the teenager and the mystery spinner has been one of the IPL's most fascinating tactical battles.
Mark Wood regularly bowls at 150+ km/h — he is one of the fastest bowlers in world cricket. In Vaibhav's T20I debut series against England, Wood tested him with raw pace.
Vaibhav scored 14 off 8 Wood deliveries at a strike rate of 175.00 without being dismissed. He pulled a 151 km/h bouncer for six at Old Trafford on debut — the shot that announced his arrival in international cricket. A 15-year-old pulling 150+ km/h pace for six on debut. In England. Against one of the world's fastest bowlers.
"That pull shot at Old Trafford — I couldn't believe it," Wood said. "I bowled 151 clicks, bouncer at his throat, and he pulled it for six like it was a friendly delivery. The kid is something else."
Bhuvneshwar Kumar's swing bowling in the powerplay is legendary. He has been India's premier swing bowler for over a decade, and his ability to move the new ball both ways makes him a constant threat to openers.
Vaibhav scored 22 off 10 Bhuvneshwar deliveries at a strike rate of 220.00 — 3 fours and 1 six. He was particularly impressive against Bhuvneshwar's outswinger, using his reach to drive through the covers. His footwork against swing bowling — moving decisively to the pitch of the ball — has been one of the most impressive aspects of his technique.
