Defining Traits

Explosive Power Hitting

Vaibhav generates extraordinary bat speed through a compact, high-elbow backlift and explosive wrist snap at the point of contact. Despite being just 15, he consistently clears boundaries with ease — his 186+ career sixes are powered by core rotation rather than brute strength. His ability to hit sixes over long-on and deep midwicket against fast bowlers exceeding 145 kph is a hallmark of his batting.

Hand-Eye Coordination

His hand-eye coordination is elite for any age, let alone 15. Vaibhav picks up length extraordinarily early, allowing him to commit to shots before most batsmen have even read the ball. This was evident in his 103 off 37 balls against SRH, where he hit deliveries from Bhuvneshwar Kumar that were aimed at the blockhole for sixes over long-off. Kumar Sangakkara described it as "the best hand-eye coordination I have seen in a teenager."

360-Degree Scoring

Unlike many power hitters who rely on one arc, Vaibhav scores all around the ground. He sweeps and reverse-sweeps spinners with control, drives pace bowlers through the covers, pulls anything short, and scoops over fine leg. In IPL 2026, his wagon wheel showed at least 15% of his runs came from each of the five major scoring zones — a sign of a truly complete batter.

Intent from Ball One

Vaibhav does not "settle in." His approach is to dominate from the first delivery. In IPL 2026, his powerplay strike rate was 252.6 — the highest of any opener in IPL history. He treats the first over as an opportunity to set the tone, not survive. This fearless approach has drawn comparisons to Virender Sehwag and Adam Gilchrist, both of whom redefined the role of the opener in their eras.

Technical Breakdown

Stance & Grip

Left-handed, slightly open stance with a high backlift. Holds the bat with a bottom-hand-dominant grip that maximizes power. His base is wide, giving him stability against both pace and spin. The open stance allows him to access the off side freely while retaining the ability to whip through midwicket.

Backlift & Trigger Movement

High backlift that comes straight down — similar to Brian Lara's technique. His trigger movement is a small press forward with the front foot, followed by a back-and-across shuffle against pace. Against spin, he uses a more pronounced front-foot press to get to the pitch of the ball. The high backlift generates bat speed; the straight downswing ensures clean contact.

Footwork

Exceptional for his age. Against pace, he transfers weight decisively — either fully forward to drive or deep into the crease to pull and cut. Against spin, he uses his feet aggressively to get to the pitch, as seen in his 81 off 49 vs Zimbabwe where he danced down the track to their spinners repeatedly. His footwork against short-pitched bowling has been the most improved aspect of his game between IPL 2025 and 2026.

Power Generation

Vaibhav generates power through timing and bat speed rather than muscular force. At 5'9" and 15 years old, he doesn't have the physique of a Chris Gayle — but he hits sixes just as far. The secret is his core rotation: his hips lead his hands through the ball, creating a whip-like effect. His wrists snap at the point of contact, adding an extra 10-15% of bat speed. This is why his sixes often clear the boundary by 15-20 meters.

Playing Spin

His record against spin is elite. Against Rashid Khan in IPL 2026, he scored 38 runs off 15 balls across three innings. Against Sunil Narine, he hit 29 off 11. He uses his feet to negate turn, plays the sweep and reverse sweep to disrupt lines, and has the hand speed to adjust mid-shot if the ball turns more or less than expected. His left-handedness gives him a natural advantage against right-arm leg-spinners.

Playing Pace

His ability to handle 145+ kph bowling is remarkable for a 15-year-old. Against Jasprit Bumrah (IPL 2026), he scored 24 off 12 balls. Against Pat Cummins, 31 off 14. Against Jofra Archer, 27 off 13. He picks up length early, commits to the pull shot decisively, and has the hand speed to adjust to yorkers. His technique against the short ball has improved significantly — in IPL 2025, he was occasionally troubled by bounce; by IPL 2026, he was pulling 150 kph deliveries for six.

What the Experts Say

"His technique is already at international standard. The way he transfers weight into his shots, the clarity of his decision-making — I have not seen this in a 15-year-old before."

Kumar Sangakkara

RR Director of Cricket

"The most impressive thing about Vaibhav's batting is his stillness at the crease. His head doesn't move. That's the sign of a great technique — everything moves around a still head."

Sunil Gavaskar

Former India Captain

"He reminds me of a left-handed Virat Kohli in terms of his intensity, but with the power game of a young Adam Gilchrist. That combination is frightening."

Ricky Ponting

IPL Coach & Former Australia Captain

The Evolution

What makes Vaibhav's technique remarkable is how quickly it has evolved. In IPL 2025 (age 13-14), he was occasionally troubled by short-pitched bowling and struggled against wide yorkers outside off stump. By IPL 2026 (age 14-15), those weaknesses had been addressed — he added a decisive pull shot against the short ball, developed the ability to ramp and scoop yorkers, and tightened his off-side play against swing.

His strike rate jumped from 205.71 in IPL 2025 to 237.30 in IPL 2026 — an increase of over 30 points in a single season. That kind of technical improvement in one year, while simultaneously increasing his run-scoring volume from 252 to 776 runs, is nearly unprecedented. It suggests a cricketing brain that processes and adapts at an elite level.

At 15, Vaibhav's technique is still developing. As he grows physically — he's currently 5 ft 9 in and still in his teenage growth phase — his power will only increase. If his bat speed and timing are already generating sixes that clear boundaries by 15-20 meters, the prospect of what he'll be capable of at 20 or 25 is staggering.
